The Cold War

TIMELINE PROJECT

We are starting a new unit in US History covering the Cold War. We will continue to have daily activities but for this unit, you will also be completing a project called the Cold War Timeline Project. You will be given class time to complete the project but may also need to use some out of school time to complete the assignment. The assignment is designed to allow you to illustrate your organizational, inquisitive, resourcefulness, and creative skills as well as help you to learn the content you will be tested on during both our unit assessment and the EOC STAAR exam.

The Cold War is a complicated period in American History and stretches over 5 decades. For our project, we will be focusing on the early Cold War that took place from the end of World War II until the end of the 1960's. The Cold War was centered around the clash of ideologies between Capitalism/Democracy (United States) and Communism (USSR - Soviet Union). The Cold War was also centered around the growing technological advancements and fear of nuclear war between the US and Soviet Union. Further, the Cold War was centered around control, especially in Berlin, and other key places around the world.

From this Clash of Superpowers came many events that shaped history and helped to shape the world we now occupy. Your job for this project is to identify key events, place them in chronological order by date of event, and summarize each event. To do this, you will be constructing a Cold War Timeline. Each entry on the timeline should contain the title of the event, the date of the event, a summary of the event, and a picture that pertains to the event. You will complete the project using either Google Slides, Google Docs, or by creating a handwritten poster (see Canvas posting for details and templates).

There are some must-haves for your project. Your Timeline should contain 10 events. There are 6 events that must be present on your timeline. Those six events are the:

1. Berlin Airlift
2. Berlin Wall
3. Cuban Missile Crisis
4. Korean War
5. McCarthyism
6. Truman Doctrine

The other 4 events will be selected by you. You may choose any of the other events from our Project Website. If you choose to include more than 10 events, you will be given 4 extra points for each event up to a max of 5 events and 20 extra credit points.

Your Timeline Project must also have a summary of the Cold War. For Slides or Docs submissions, there is a space provided for the summary. For handwritten submissions, you should place your summary in the bottom left corner of the poster.

RUBRIC

"Today, should total war ever break out again--no matter how--our two countries would become the primary targets. It is an ironic but accurate fact that the two strongest powers are the two in the most danger of devastation. All we have built, all we have worked for, would be destroyed in the first 24 hours."
- John F. Kennedy, June 10th, 1963
